Many of the homes are situated on compact property lots and feature old world charm. Beautiful victorian and colonial homes from the late 1800s and early 1900s are common. In recent years, builders have found it profitable to knock-down and replace older ranch and cape homes with high-end new construction. In 2005, Chatham Borough was recognized by Money Magazine as one of the "Best Places to Live" in the United States, ranked 9th. Chatham Borough and Chatham Township have a joint school district and are commonly referred to as The Chathams.
